An invention is a new thing that helps people. A telephone is an invention. A computer is an invention. Today, we will read about inventions. Let’s learn the words!

Finding the Big Idea
The main idea is the most important idea in a paragraph. It is the “big idea.” Other sentences are “details.” Details explain the main idea.
How to find the Main Idea:
- Read the first sentence. The main idea is often in the first sentence.
- Look for repeated words. If the paragraph repeats the word “computer,” the main idea is probably about computers.
Example 1:
“My smartphone is a very useful invention. I use it to call my friends. I also use it to take photos. It is a small computer in my pocket.”
What is the Main Idea?
- (A) I use it to take photos.
- (B) My smartphone is a very useful invention.
- (C) It is a small computer.
The main idea is (B) because it tells the big idea, while the other sentences are detail explaining why it is useful.
Example 2:
“AI is a smart computer. AI can help people. It can write stories. It can also answer questions. AI is a new and exciting invention.”
What is the Main Idea?
- (A) AI can write stories.
- (B) AI is a smart and helpful invention.
- (C) AI is exciting.
The main idea is (B).
