Key Vocabulary
Let’s learn the words for things in a bedroom.
- Bed: I sleep on my bed every night.
- Desk: I study at my desk in the bedroom.
- Chair: I sit on the chair when I do homework.
- Lamp: I turn on the lamp when it is dark.
- Window: I open the window to get fresh air.
- Closet: I keep my clothes in the closet.
- Bookshelf: I put my books on the bookshelf.
Key Preposition (Preposition of Places)
- In: The clothes are in the wardrobe.
- On: The pillow is on the bed.
- Under: The shoes are under the bed.
- Above: The clock is above the door.
- Below: The rug is below the table.
- Over: The blanket is over the child.
- Next to: The lamp is next to the bed.
- Beside: The chair is beside the desk.
- Between: The slippers are between the bed and the wall.
- Behind: The mirror is behind the door.
- In front of: The study table is in front of the window.
- Near: The bookshelf is near the bed.
- At: She is standing at the bedroom door.
Activity: Label the Room
Building Sentences About Your Room
To describe a room, we write sentences about what is in the room and where it is. We can use the phrases “There is…” (for one thing) and “There are…” (for more than one thing).
We use prepositions like on, in, under, and next to to say the location.
The sentence structure is:
There is a + [object] + [preposition] + the [other object].
Example 1: One object.
Look at the picture. We want to describe the lamp.
- Sentence: There is a lamp on the desk.
Example 2: More than one object.
Now, look at these books. There are three books.
- Sentence: There are books on the bookshelf.
We use “There are…” because there is more than one book.
Tips for Success
Here are three simple tips for writing about your room.
- Use “There is” for ONE thing. For example, There’s a bed.
- Use “There are” for TWO or MORE things. For example, There are two pillows.
- Use prepositions to tell the LOCATION. Words like on, in, under, and next to tell us where something is.
