Listening for Daily Activities
On the TOEFL test, you will often hear people talking about their lives. Understanding daily routines is a basic and important skill. We will practice listening for action words (verbs) that tell us what a person is doing.
Example Question:
Let’s look at an example.
Listen to Adi. What does he do first?
A. Eat breakfast
B. Go to school
C. Wake up
Explanation: The correct answer is C. Wake up. In the audio, Adi says, “I wake up at 6 o’clock. Then, I eat breakfast.” The word “then” tells us that eating breakfast happens after waking up. So, the first activity is waking up.
Tips for Success
Here are two simple tips to help you listen better.
- Listen for Action Words. Focus on verbs like eat, go, study, wake up. These words tell you the main activity.
- Listen for Time Words. Pay attention to words like in the morning, at 7 AM, after, then. They help you understand the order of events.
