Reading for Key Information

A postcard gives us important information in a very short message. When you read a postcard, you should look for the answers to four key questions:

  • Who is it FOR? (The receiver)
  • Who is it FROM? (The sender)
  • WHERE are they? (The location)
  • WHAT are they doing/seeing? (The activity/description)

Let’s look at an example.

Dear Rina,

Greetings from Bali! The weather is very sunny and the beach is beautiful. I am having a great holiday!

See you soon,

Budi

Finding the Information:

  • Who is it FOR? Look after “Dear…”. It is for Rina.
  • Who is it FROM? Look at the name at the end. It is from Budi.
  • WHERE are they? Look after “Greetings from…”. They are in Bali.
  • WHAT are they seeing? The text says the beach is beautiful.

Tips for Success

Here are two easy tips for reading postcards.

  1. Find the Names First. The name at the top (after “Dear”) is the receiver. The name at the bottom is the sender.
  2. Look for Capital Letters. Places (like Bali, Jakarta) and names (like Rina, Budi) always start with a capital letter. This helps you find them quickly.

Skill Practice

Let’s practice reading another postcard. Use this postcard for all the exercises below.

Dear Ivan,

Greetings from the mountains! I am on a school holiday in Lembang. The weather is cool and not sunny. Yesterday, I saw a beautiful tea garden. It was very green.

Your friend,
Dewi.
