Finding Clues in Short Descriptions
When we read, we can find clue words that help us understand the text. For example, if you read a description, clue words can tell you what place it is talking about.
Let’s look at an example. Read the short text below:
“This is a very quiet place. You can find thousands of books here. Students often come here to study or borrow something to read at home.”
Example Question:
What is this place?
A. A school
B. A restaurant
C. A library
Explanation:
The correct answer is C. A library. The clue words are books, study, and borrow. These words help us know that the text is describing a library.
Tips for Success
Here are two simple tips to help you read and understand descriptions.
- Look for Key Words. Don’t try to understand every single word. Find the most important “clue words” (like money, books, food, train).
- Use the Picture. If there is a picture, look at it! It gives you a big clue about the topic of the text.
