Like: I like listening to music in my free time.
Love: I love reading books before bed.
Don’t like: I don’t like watching scary movies.
Hate: I hate eating spicy food.
Music: I enjoy listening to music every day.
Movies: I watch movies with my friends on weekends.
Sports: I play sports like football and basketball.
Books: I read books to learn new stories.
Spicy food: I sometimes eat spicy food for fun.
Sweet food: I like eating sweet food like candy.

Connecting Your Ideas

When we write, we connect our ideas to make sentences better. We use special connecting words called conjunctions. Today, we will learn three important conjunctions: and, but, and or.

Using “and”

We use and to join two similar ideas or two equal phrases. Use it when you like two things or dislike two things. It shows that the ideas go together.

Example: I like music and movies. (two likes)
Example: I don’t like spiders, and I don’t like snakes. (two dislikes)

Using “but”

We use but to show two different ideas. Use it when you like one thing and dislike another thing. It shows contrast between the two ideas.
