Keyword Spotting

To find information fast, you don’t need to read every word. You can scan the text for keywords. A keyword is the most important word in a question.

How to Spot Keywords:

  • Read the question first.
  • Find the keyword in the question.
  • Scan the text (look quickly) to find the same keyword or a similar word. The answer is usually in the same sentence!

Example:

Question: What is Budi’s hobby? (The keyword is hobby.)
Text to Scan: My name is Budi. I am a student in Bandung. My hobby is playing football. I play with my friends.
Answer: The sentence with the keyword hobby says his hobby is playing football. It’s that easy!
Let’s try another one:
Question: Who likes to watch movies? (The keyword is who, which means we need to find a person’s name.)
Text to Scan: My name is Siti. I like cooking. My brother, Ari, likes to watch movies.
Answer: Ari enjoys watching movies in their free time. So, Ari is the answer.

Tips for Success

  • Read the Title First: The title often tells you the main topic of the text. Use it to guess what you are about to read.
  • Don’t Stop for Every Word: If you see a word you don’t know, try to guess its meaning from the words around it. Keep reading to get the main idea.
  • Look for Topic Words: Scan the text for keywords related to hobbies, such as play, enjoy, like, read, watch, or listen.
  • Summarize: After you finish reading, try to say the main idea in one simple sentence. For example: “This text is about a girl who loves to play basketball.”
