Listening for Instructions
In many academic and real-world situations, you will need to listen to and understand a process or a sequence of steps. This skill is essential, from setting up new software to following a lecturer’s directions. In a listening test, this is a common way to measure your comprehension.
An instruction is a command that tells you what to do. This lesson focuses on how to identify these commands quickly and accurately.
There are two main cues to listen for when identifying instructions.
1. The Imperative Verb (The “Action” Word)
The most important part of an instruction is the imperative verb. This is the specific action word that tells you what to do. Instructions almost always begin with, or are built around, these verbs.

2. Sequential Language (The “Signpost” Words)
When an instruction involves more than one step, speakers use “signposts” or “sequence words” to guide you through the correct order.
Listen for these words to keep your place in the process:
