Finishing Your Email

In any form of writing, a clear structure is essential for the reader to understand your message. A standard email is built on three key components: the opening, the body, and the conclusion.

1. The Opening

This is the greeting. It says “hello” to the person you are writing to.

  • Example: Hi Budi,
  • Example: Dear Mom,

2. The Body

This is the main part of your email. This is where you outline your main ideas and provide supporting details.

  • Example: I am on holiday in Bali. The weather is warm and sunny. Yesterday, I visited Kuta beach. I ate delicious ayam betutu.

3. The Concluding Sentence

This is the LAST sentence of your email. It tells the reader “I am finished” and summarizes your main idea or feeling.

A good concluding sentence summarizes the main idea. You can use special phrases to start your conclusion.

Concluding Phrases:

  • In conclusion, …
  • To summarize, …

Or, for an email, you can just say your main feeling.

  • It was a great trip.
  • I had a wonderful time.
  • I was delighted.

Example:

Let’s read this email.

To: My Friend
Subject: Hello from Bali!

Hi Budi,
I am on holiday in Bali. The weather is warm and sunny.
Yesterday, I visited Kuta beach. I swam in the water. Today, I ate delicious ayam betutu. I am very happy.

[Write conclusion here…]

What is a good concluding sentence?

  • Good: In conclusion, Bali is a wonderful holiday. (This summarizes the main idea.)
  • Good: I had a great time in Bali. (This shows the main feeling.)
  • Bad: Tomorrow, I will buy a t-shirt. (This is a new idea, not a conclusion.)

Rule: Do not add new information in the concluding sentence.
