The Inverted Pyramid Structure (3-Part Formula)
An effective introductory paragraph follows a funnel or inverted pyramid structure, moving from broad to specific:
- The Hook (Sentence 1): Broad attention-grabber. Introduce the overarching theme of urbanization or city life using a striking statistic, a historical trend, or a thought-provoking observation.
- Background / Context (Sentences 2–3): Narrow the focus. Explain current trends, opposing viewpoints, or the specific conflict related to the prompt (e.g., rapid rural-to-urban migration).
- The Thesis Statement (Final Sentence): The narrowest point of the funnel. State your definitive stance and outline your main supporting points.
