In the TOEFL iBT Listening section, Function Questions (often phrased as “Why does the speaker say this?” or “What is the purpose of the speaker’s remark?”) test your ability to look beyond the literal meaning of words. You must determine what the speaker is doing (e.g., correcting a mistake, offering a suggestion, expressing hesitation, or complaining).

Core Strategies for Function Questions

1. Listen for Conversational Cues: Pay attention to how a sentence begins. Phrases like “To be honest…”, “Have you considered…”, or “I’m afraid that…” signal specific functions like hesitation, suggestion, or polite refusal.
2. Analyze Acoustic Tone: Notice changes in pitch, pacing, or emphasis. A rising inflection on a declarative sentence often indicates surprise, doubt, or a request for clarification.
3. Distinguish Content from Purpose: Do not just focus on what topic is discussed (e.g., a wedding custom), but why that specific phrase was uttered at that exact moment in the dialogue.
